President Dooley is ready to build a brighter future for Rhode Island
New University of Rhode Island President David M. Dooley is making a big splash into the Ocean State. The recently inaugurated 11th president of the University of Rhode Island is ready to help change the econmic state of Rhode Island. Dooley recently wrote an opinion editorial in the Providence Journal that talked about URI’s role in the renewal of the state’s economy.
Dooley believes that in order to pull our state out of this economic funk, we have to recreate an economy that will sustain the 21st century. This means that our state can benefit with new technological advances that professors and students at URI are helping to perfect. URI can do this because they are a major research university. Dooley stated in his opinion editorial that, “Their [URI’s faculty and students] research and scholarship frequently create new intellectual property that leads to the creation of new companies.” By coming up with innovative ideas and creating new products, URI is helping to expand already established Rhode Island companies and create new Rhode Island businesses.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with President Dooley to talk about how he hopes to change URI and positively impact the state. He said that he wants students to get more first hand experience in the real world. He would like the students to work outside of the classroom more to gain necessary skills that they will need once they graduate. This gives Rhode Island students an advantage over others. It allows them to gain knowledge that they would not learn in a classroom. This will help to produce students that hope to make an impact on Rhode Island and the world.
Supporting URI’s research activity is extremely important. The research is starting to create new developments in science and technology and create new partnerships with Rhode Island companies to expand the discovery process. Dooley believes that by encouraging this research process we are helping to create a “knowledge-based economy” that will benefit Rhode Islanders.
URI’s role in the economic renewal is based off entrepreneurship. President Dooley has become an entrepreneur of the University by reaching out to the Rhode Island community and being proactive in all of his efforts. All of the research activities being done at the University are helping to mold students into becoming entrepreneurs themselves. With all the new science and technological advances that are being discovered the students are able to create new companies, which in turn will create new jobs for people in the community.
Bucci Insurance Group supports all of President Dooley’s efforts to help our state. We believe that higher education is something that will bring us out of this economic decline.
