10 Ways Your Vehicle Affects Your Daily Commute

When your daily commute demands hours behind the wheel and treks through bustling streets and busy highways, making sure you’re driving a safe car is a top priority. Driving your car every day can put you at risk for collision or breakdown. There are several preventative measures you can take to protect yourself from unforeseen events. Choosing the right car for your transportation needs is one of them.
Consider these 10 ways your vehicle affects your daily commute:

1. Mileage. Miles per gallon are an important factor when you’re driving long distances on a daily basis. Keep the car in great shape with regular tune-ups and maintenance checks so that you’re maximizing your mileage.

2. Tires. Tires that are low on air or are balding can make your car work harder. High quality tires on your vehicle can increase your mileage and also lower your risk of an accident on that daily commute.

3. Cruise control options. If you’re traveling long distances on a highway or through a country ride where you can maintain a steady speed, use cruise control to improve your gas mileage. Not all vehicles are designed with this feature, but if yours does, you can save some money on gas during your daily commute.

4. GPS navigation. Avoiding heavy traffic on the major roadways or taking alternative routes during road construction is easier with the help of GPS navigation tools. If your vehicle has this feature, your daily commute may be much easier.

5. Automatic vs. manual transmission. Driving a stick shift in a busy city or traffic jams on a daily basis can just add stress to your day. If you’re in the process of choosing a vehicle and know you will be driving through heavy traffic daily, stick with an automatic transmission and avoid a super-stressful drive.

6. Compact vs. SUV. A long daily commute can be very costly when you drive a truck, SUV or other larger vehicle. Compact and economy cars are the best “commuter” cars and will help you save a lot of money on gas and other expenses in the long run.

7. Heater and AC usage. If you plan on using your heater and AC regularly during your daily commute, you will be burning up a lot of gas. Choose a fuel-efficient vehicle to keep gas consumption low on your daily commute

8. Driver comfort. When you’re spending hours in the car each day, make sure you’re comfortable in that seated position. If your vehicle has heated seats, plush leather seating, and other deluxe amenities, your commute will be a much less stressful experience.

9. Music quality. Vehicles with a Bose Wave radio or other music system can make your commute go that much faster. Find out what music and entertainment systems your vehicle is compatible with so that you can enjoy your favorite tunes wherever you go.

10. Power steering. Cars that have power steering are generally easy to operate and allow you to navigate through tight spaces with ease. Reduce stress on your daily commute by driving a car designed with power steering.

Bucci Insurance hopes you have a safe and happy commute. If your auto insurance is need of a tune up, contact us today. You could also consider another route and ride your bike if your place of employment is located close to home.

Insurers Played Leading Role In Boosting Workplace Safety

The tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, which occurred a century ago, ushered in a new era of workplace safety, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.).

Recognizing the importance of fire safety, insurers today regularly have loss control engineering units inspect policyholder workplaces to evaluate the fire protection features of the buildings. In addition, the U.S. has made great strides in constructing more fire resistant buildings and upgrading building codes, thereby reducing the incidence of fires and improving fire suppression techniques.
Insurers today allocate substantial resources to verifying the adequacy of a building’s fire barriers and fire protection systems as well as the commercial policyholder’s employee training and fire prevention programs. Insurers also look more intently at a building’s exit arrangements, something that was rarely considered in the early part of the 20th century. Policyholders who proactively reduce their risks enjoy a lower premium rate.
State governmental workplace safety initiatives, many of which were launched soon after the events of 1911, were supplemented on the federal level in the early 1970s with the creation of the Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA). Today insurers that cover high-rise buildings generally make sure their policyholders have the following safety measures in place:
  • Automatic fire sprinkler systems: The chances of a worker dying in a fire, and the average property loss per fire, are both cut dramatically when these systems are in place. In fact, insurance companies would prefer that all multi-story buildings have automatic fire sprinkler systems, although such requirements are generally dictated by local government building codes.
  • Mandatory fire drills: Employees working in high rise buildings are typically trained, by either their employer or the building’s management team, on how to exit their building in the event of an emergency.
  • Smoke alarms and smoke detectors: These are standard devices in almost all U.S. workplaces, whether the business is housed in a high-rise building or a single story structure.
  • Proper storage of flammable materials: The Triangle Waist Company fire accelerated quickly because the workplace was tightly packed with wooden tables and chairs, which sat alongside sewing machines that used oil. Meanwhile, bundles of combustible cloth and tissue paper were lying everywhere when the blaze started, according to a National Fire Protection Association analysis of the historic fire. Today, no insurer would stay in business for very long if the businesses it insured habitually filled their workplaces with such obvious fire hazards.
The I.I.I. has posted a special section dedicated to the Triangle Fire Centennial. Facts and Statistics on fire losses as well as Workplace Safety and Workers Compensation are also available. Contact Bucci Insurance Group for more questions regarding property loss and business insurance.

Bringing Kent Hospital to the 21st Century with the iPad

At Kent Hospital, Warwick, RI,  and other community hospitals, the iPad tablet computer and other similar devices are taking their place alongside stethoscopes and thermometers for doctor. Bucci Insurance Group is supporting this initiative to raise money to buy Kent County Hospital 28 ipads to improve patient care. If you or anyone you know may be interested in contributing please contact info@buciinsurance.com.

Although it was never beyond the realm of possibility, the medical community is taking an interest in the iPad at a rate that may even surprise Apple. In addition to the countless doctors and private medical practices that now utilize the iPad’s services, some hospitals are beginning to purchase the tablet computer in bulk. Kaweah Delta hospital in California, for example, just purchased one-hundred iPads for its treatment facility. Officials at the hospital say that the iPads will replace hospital laptops for every day use. Not only will iPads be employed for routine administrative tasks, they will also be tapped for activities like reviewing X-ray images and EKG results.

While the iPad still isn’t cheap by any stretch of the imagination, in the medical field, however, the iPad isn’t all that expensive either. Some touch-screen devices widely used in hospitals cost upwards of five times as much as the basic iPad. In this regard, putting the iPad to use in hospitals could result in substantial savings for the medical facilities that embrace the device.
